Do You Wanna’ Win?

The following is a Bible Study I wrote about 10 years ago that still has worth today. It addresses how to be MORE than an overcomer in Christ. I am certainly not the best or most perfect Christian, but I sure am a lot better at it than I used to be, and I truly believe it’s due to having applied the principles found in this study! Let’s begin…..

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Sr. was very opinionated, but also very good at what he did. The late 7 time Champion was fearless, and had rightfully earned his moniker “the Intimidator”; so named because of his routine of coming up on a slower car, perhaps even the leader of a race, and then riding their bumper at 200 mph, intimidating them to move out of his way, or nudging them with his front bumper and sometimes spinning them out if they wouldn’t!

A few years before his death at Daytona in 2001, the Sanctioning Body felt their cars were becoming too fast on the Super Speedway tracks of Daytona and Talladega, and mandated carburetor restrictor plates. It takes a particular ratio of fuel and air, called the Stoichiometric Mixture, to efficiently and completely burn all the fuel introduced into the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine, that ratio being 14.7 parts air to one part fuel. NASCAR engines are designed to operate at just that perfect ratio thus producing maximum power. The theory behind their ruling was that if you restrict the amount of air available to an intake manifold, you subsequently reduce the amount of fuel provided, as fuel is drawn in as air rushes past the carburetor’s jets in the metering blocks. As a result of reduced fuel, the engine’s power output would go down. In the case of those plates, it dropped the engine’s output from around 800hp to 480hp plus or minus. Without the restrictor plate, Rusty Wallace had been clocked at 228mph on the back straightaway in testing at Talladega. The lap average in qualifying now is around 190mph.

When asked by a reporter about the restrictor plate change to slow them down, and if the cars indeed were becoming too fast, Earnhardt Sr. responded in typical Intimidator fashion to anyone who might be listening…..

“Well, do ya’ wanna race or don’t ya? If you’re scared of ’em, maybe you should stay out of ’em.”

While his fans loved his boldness and the cowboy toughness in his style, the point he made in that answer can be easily be applied to Christianity as well (you knew I was going there; everything is a segue into Christian living with me). So allow me to rephrase Earnhardt’s response to that reporter’s question…..

Do you want to win as a Christian or don’t you?

Let me ask you some subsequent questions if you’re a born again believer…..

Would you rather live life as a struggling Christian, or live life as a successful Christian?
Do you want to be victorious?
Do you want to please God every day?
Do you want to have victory over the enemy?
Do you want to have joy?
Do you want to bear fruit?

The answers for all of those questions, of course, should be yes. And the guaranteed surefire way to accomplish those things and more, and the true keys for being successful in following Christ, are listed in chapter 1 of the book of Colossians. They’re found in Paul’s prayer for the Saints at Colossae. He begins this way…..

“For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,”
Colossians 1:9

That’s the Key! When you are filled with “the knowledge of His will” and have “spiritual wisdom and understanding” with regard to that will, and when you then carry out that will in obedience, the attributes in verse 10 through 12 of that same prayer, listed as bullet points below, will be yours and you will be victorious!

If you are filled with the knowledge of His will and have spiritual wisdom and understanding, you will….

•Walk in a manner worthy of The Lord

•Please Him in all respects

•Bear fruit in every good work

•Increase in the knowledge of God

•Be strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might

•Attain all steadfastness and patience

•Be joyously giving thanks to the Father.

So how do you achieve all that?
You simply ask Him every morning to give you the knowledge of His will for you and to grant you spiritual wisdom and understanding, and then DO WHAT HE SAYS!!
Now do NOT downplay the simplicity of that formula. You will be amazed at the difference in your life when you eventually have the knowledge of His will and His wisdom and understanding about that will, and you then walk in it!

Don’t delay! Begin to ask Him today, and get started on your journey toward living as a Conqueror rather than one who is continually conquered. Yes it’s true, you might have to give up a few things; you might have to make some personal changes in your lifestyle. But the rewards will far outweigh the cost to you. You’ll be riding the bumper of the enemy, and he’ll flee or be spun out in the process! So do you wanna’ win or don’t you? Now you know how!

And that’s the way I see it!
