A Pastors Perspective “Natural Disasters”

Southaven,Ms

Is God judging America with Natural Disasters?

After the destruction from Hurricane Harvey, the question once again seems to be on the minds of some….”Is God judging America?”

Well, let me state my answer clearly and emphatically….

NO!

He is not unleashing His wrath on America because of our sins! Nor did He unleash His wrath on 9/11, or at any other time there has been tragedy here in our Country, as some have believed. There were even prominent Church leaders on TV after 9/11 babbling forth that “God is judging America because of Abortions.”

Poppycock!!

Those people, who should have known better, were ignorant of scriptures and chose to spew their ignorance anyway, all the while basking in their own piety and smug self-righteousness.

Let’s look at some of those scriptures. Jesus made a very telling statement in John….

“For just as the Father gives life to those He raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone He wants. In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, He has given the Son absolute authority to judge, so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:21-23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

You must understand that the wrath of God was satisfied at Calvary! By His obedience, Jesus paid the price for all sin, and the wrath of the Father has been laid up for the end of time, where it will then be unleashed during the Great White Throne Judgement. This is why Jesus’ submission to the Father by going to Calvary means something so wonderful to us! He took the punishment we deserved!

Remember, our Heavenly Father turned all judgement over to the Son, and the word tells us even Jesus isn’t judging us. Look at John again….

“If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.”
‭‭John‬ ‭12:47-48‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Again, the Father is not angry and sending destruction to America because of our sins! Yes, we have sinned! Yes, we deserve His punishment! But Jesus took that punishment! Only those who have not accepted Jesus as Savior will incur penalties for their sins. As we’ve said before, sin has a penalty, and it is death! Now it should be mentioned that God will allow things to get our attention. He’s certainly done that with me in the past, but He wasn’t throwing me away or punishing me, but merely allowing me to have a “teachable moment”!

Something else to consider; if God were judging sins, say the sin of abortion for example, wouldn’t only the guilty be punished? Why would innocent people pay for the sins of others? It’s foolish to think that God would wipe out a Nation because of the particular sins of some of its people. Look at Sodom and Gomorrah. The occupants of those Cities were individually punished for their own wickedness, as NONE within the Cities were found righteous. The only righteous people found after a search by Angels were visitors Lot and his family, and all but the wife were spared before the destruction came (we previously wrote about that in another column). Once again though, that was prior to the Cross! Please understand the magnitude of the Cross; Jesus came to earth and satisfied the anger of God toward sin with His crucifixion, and for that we praise Him and we worship Him!

As a reminder, look at Jesus’ own words in Matthew….

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18‬ ‭NASB‬‬

Jesus is in charge! Merciful loving Jesus! You can go ahead and rejoice at that!

Let’s quickly review. The wrath of God was satisfied at Calvary. He then gave Jesus all authority to judge, yet even He doesn’t judge us. However, His words will judge all who aren’t under the covering of His blood on Judgement Day.

So the next time you hear someone say that God is judging America because of abortion, or wickedness, or protestors, or because of Trump, or because of Obama, or because of Congress, or because of the media, or because of whatever, simply look them in the eye and say “Nonsense!”
Further explain to them that Jesus took ALL the punishment for sin on the cross, and God’s wrath is being stored up for the end of time. However, they need to accept what Jesus did for them on the cross, so that they won’t find out just how terrible the coming wrath will be on that day! Yes, God may allow things to happen, causing people to turn from sin and draw near to Him, but it’s not judgement for their sin. If it were, we would ALL be dead!

And that’s the way I see it!
