Police Killers Face Tougher Penalties

Kill A Police Officer or First Responder in Mississippi and your punishment will be
three times harder than it was in the past. It’s one of the new laws that took effect on July 1.
The bill is called The Back the Badge Act of 2017 calls for tougher penalties for those who put our heros in
their sights.
“With the recent attacks on police in the United States it is vital that we do all we can to support our law
enforcement officers in Mississippi as well as Fire and EMTs”, said Steve Hopkins (R) Dist. 7 of DeSoto County.

The law reads in part: “Upon conviction for such crime, be punished by a term of imprisonment of up to
three (3) times that authorized by law for the violation, or a fine of up to three (3) times that
authorized by law for the violation, or both.”
Hopkins said, “This is a great win for the good guys and an opportunity to let would be criminals know that any attempt at violence towards law enforcement
will not be tolerated.”
