Cates received the Mississippi Poetry Society Lifetime Achievement Award for her talents.

She said this award means everything to her. “ It’s a reflection of the good stuff I have done in my life”.

“Poetry is my hobby, I love it”.

This is one of the few times the convention has been held in the Northern part of the state. They are normally on the coast or in Jackson.

When asked if poetry is loosing it’s popularity she replied, “Poetry is everywhere, greeting cards, the music on the radio, it’s all around us”.

If the Cates name sounds familiar it’s because she and her husband owned Cates Meat Company in Whitehaven for 30 years.

Her son, T.J. Cates, is a celebrity in Nashville with several entertainment television shows.
