Hernando, MS
By: Steve Dodd
Downtown Hernando will be filled with the sounds of Southern Gospel and Christian music this coming Saturday. The 3rd annual Rock Around The Flock fundraiser will be at the historic Hernando Courthouse Square, Saturday, May 6 from noon to 6 p.m.
Rock Around The Flock is the creation of Tommy Dunlap, who is an engineer by trade and an accomplished musician. Through the concert, he hopes that people from all faiths and denominations can come together and not only enjoy the music but also support a very worthy cause. The concert banner refers to a scripture that sets the tone. It is Psalms 95:1 which states, “Let us sing unto the Lord.”
The fundraiser is to benefit the Hernando United Methodist Church’s Interfaith Council on Poverty. Families from the Hernando and Nesbit areas are served through the food pantry.
Belhaven University is helping to sponsor the event by covering some of the costs and paying for advertising via local media outlets. The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is donating a deputy to keep the Courthouse open providing restroom facilities for the attendees.
Although the event is free to the public, monetary donations and / or non-perishable food items would be greatly appreciated. Concert goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and sit on the Courthouse grounds. The Interfaith council will be selling hot dogs and drinks so you can sit back, enjoy lunch and good music.
There will be a limited number of commemorative t-shirts available for purchase with the proceeds going toward the charity. Individual performers will also have CDs available for purchase.
