Special Olympics Torch Makes A Stop In DeSoto County

Hernando, Ms

The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics took place Monday, May 5 in Hernando.

The group of around 30 participated and consisted of local law enforcement officers and special olympics athletes.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run was started 38 years ago in Wichita, Kansas as a way to raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.

While carrying the flame, officers and athletes are referred to as “Guardians of the Flame” and everyone had a turn with the torch.

The run started at the Courthouse and traveled eastbound on Commerce Street to the railroad tracks and back.

Traffic was detoured during the event but drivers didn’t seem to mind the inconvenience for such a good cause.

Officers from all over DeSoto County were part of the great event and the torch was passed off to the Biloxi Police Department as it makes it way across the state.
