The Name of Jesus

When people hear the name of Jesus, many thoughts may come to their mind.  They may reflect back on a portrait of Jesus they have seen; that one where He is portrayed as a handsome Caucasian with long curly auburn hair….a rather loving and meek looking fellow.  Or they may picture Him hanging on the cross, an object of pity and shame. Or perhaps they think of the childhood song “Jesus loves me this I know”, but don’t really know much more of Him than that.  You might think that everyone knows who Jesus is, and you might think that YOU know who He is, but do you know the Jesus that He really is?

The form Jesus took on earth was that of Jewish origin, so the image of Him looking like a dashing 1930’s romantic movie star is fairly inaccurate, but frankly, what His appearance was back then is irrelevant.  It’s far more important that you understand who He is TODAY!  What do the scriptures say about THAT Jesus?

He is not just someone who overcame death and proudly sat by His Father once He arrived back in Heaven. He didn’t just get an ‘attaboy’ from God, and a trophy for obedience. God didn’t brag to the angels about His boy and then things returned to normal. There was transformation and a shift in power took place. All of Heaven rejoiced that day!  On that day when the risen Jesus ascended from earth to the Father’s side, there was the installation of a King!  The King of Kings actually. He took His place on a Throne to rule and reign over all Creation.

In his letter to the believers at Ephesus, the apostle Paul explains what God the Father did for Jesus,  and what happened with Jesus on that day when He arose….

“which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:20-23

Think of that…..He didn’t just get a ‘welcome home hug’ and a slap on the back…..the Father placed Him in power “as head over all things!”  He now rules by the Father’s side as Lord over all the Universe!

In Philippians, Paul explained the depth of that name of Jesus…..

“For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:9-11

That name of Jesus is the name above ALL names, and everyone will bow before Him, no matter who they are!  Even if they are someone who doesn’t currently believe in Him.  Every saint will bow. Every enemy will bow. Everyone who worships Buddha or Allah will bow. Every drug dealer. Every vile politician. Every pedophile. Every arrogant celebrity. Every media person. Every atheist.  EVERYONE will bow before Him and confess Him as Lord! On that day EVERYONE will take a knee, and it won’t be to protest, it will be in fear and awe!

This was the Father’s plan all along; that Jesus would be the head of all things and would rule over all things after His resurrection. But there’s more to this Jesus than the fact He came to earth to die for you and that He now reigns as a result. Did you know that Jesus was there in the very beginning and actually created everything?  Read as Paul describes Jesus in Colossians…..

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.”‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:13-20

And read John’s opening statement in his gospel…..

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.”‭‭John‬ ‭1:1-3‬

Jesus created everything and apart from Him nothing came into being!  In Jesus all things are held together!  His power, given Him by the Father, is the very glue that binds the Universe!

The disciple John and the Lord Jesus were very close while Jesus was in ministry on earth. John is identified as the disciple whom Jesus loved. But when Jesus ascended to the Throne and took on the role of having all authority, His very appearance changed and John became a witness. Let’s read what John the disciple wrote when he saw Jesus some sixty years after His resurrection…..

“Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.”‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:12-18

John was in awe of this Jesus, once his friend but now Lord of all…..”When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.”  To John, He had been Jesus the Teacher, Jesus the Rabbi, Jesus the innocent man who would die at the hands of His enemies, but on that day on the island of Patmos, Jesus the all powerful Lord of the Universe stood before him and he fainted in fear!

Jesus the Creator is now Jesus the Supreme Authority over all things.  It was the Father’s plan all along…..that not only would He create everything, but that Jesus would one day RULE over all that creation.

He’s no longer on the cross dying, He now rules over death!  He’s not that meek and gentle man who was beaten, slapped and spit upon; the poor soul who never fought back when falsely accused by Jewish leaders and was eventually killed by Roman soldiers!  He has risen to be Judge over all life!  He is the true LORD of everything!  He rules with ALL authority. He is watching over His creation with wisdom and power. He will judge the nations. We will fall at His feet as dead men!  Every knee shall bow before Him and every tongue will confess Him as Lord!  He rules and He reigns!

Treat Him as THAT Jesus. He’s not that pretty Jesus in the portrait hanging in the hallway of your Grandmother’s house, HE IS JESUS THE LORD OF ALL CREATION!  Bow before Him in your heart and worship Him. Receive Him as your Savior and Lord!  Be in awe of Him!  Submit to Him!  He is your KING!

And that’s the way I see it!
