This Life Versus Eternity

The other day I got in my 14 year old but faithful truck to head to the store and noticed the starter was dragging a bit. The battery is around 5 years old, so it’s either time for a new battery, a starter, or perhaps it has other issues. I don’t drive it a lot, but if I don’t do anything about that problem, eventually it’s going to let me down. And on a day when I really need it! Then I’ll be upset! After all, I’m needing to use the truck or I wouldn’t get in it, and that is going to frustrate me! I usually try to be a man of peace, but I’ll probably slam the door while muttering under my breath, upset at myself for not being proactive and fixing it beforehand. Then I’ll feel bad at being upset and apologize to the Lord, realizing it’s not that big a deal in the span of life!

But life is full of disappointments like that. We carry a lot of grief and frustration and anger around with us when it’s really not that big a deal in contrast to the big picture. What is the “big picture”? For Christians, it’s our eternity in Heaven compared to this life.

Let’s attempt to put things in perspective by looking at the time spent on earth in this life with all it’s upsets, compared to the time that will be spent during our eternal life in Heaven with God that we Christians will have.
Here’s just one example:

Interstate 90 in the United States runs from Boston, Massachusetts to Seattle, Washington. It runs through 13 states and is 3,020 miles long (3,019.98 miles to be exact). Let’s say that traveling the length of that interstate in a small way represents the time spent while living in Heaven. What amount of time would be spent traveling this life on earth in comparison? The time it takes to cover the span of our life here on earth compared to the total time it takes to drive I-90 would be less than a 100/th of a second. It’s immeasurable. Instead of miles driven, it would be less that the width of the letter “i” on your screen. Rather small, huh. As a matter of fact, microscopic in contrast. So, we are going to live our entire life here on earth in less than a second compared to eternity, and we’re upset when the car won’t start? But that’s who we are.

We must condition or program ourselves to keep the perspective in mind that life is very short. When we’re handed a disappointment, either through our own doing, or the fault of someone else, or just because of life in general, we must keep in mind the fact that one day it just won’t matter anymore. Whether we’re sick or in good health today; broke or well to do; depressed or encouraged; lonely or in love, there is coming a day when it just won’t mean that much. One day we’ll be completely and totally healed, we will be filled with joy, and we will not have any of the pain or curses this life has brought us. Getting to that one day might take a lifetime here, but it’s less than a second in time compared to our eternal life with the Lord!

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:18

Now for the other side of the coin. If you’re not saved, you’ll still live forever, just not in Heaven. You’ll instead be in a horrible place of torment.
Read Jesus’ warning…..

“Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21:6-8

Don’t be that person! Don’t be the one who while here on earth rejected God because you wanted to live for pleasure. It will not be worth it! Don’t choose to live here on earth without accepting Jesus as your Savior, and end up spending eternity in torment!! A sliver of time spent in sin and pleasure versus an eternity in Hell is a terrible exchange! Surrender now while you have time, and you’ll then spend all eternity in bliss with peace and joy, and you’ll be surrounded by love! If you don’t confess your sins to Jesus and accept Him as Savior, you’ll then find yourself in torture, pain, and torment, surrounded by evil and hate forever! Please heed Paul’s warning…..

“But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But He will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭2:5-11‬ ‭NLT‬

Don’t let those verses describe you and your eternal fate! Be saved today and live forever with the Lord, filled with joy! There’s a better day acomin’ folks!

And that’s the way I see it!
