Southaven Police Car Struck By Drunk Driver Sending Officers To Hospital

Southaven, Ms

Two Southaven Police officers are lucky to be alive today after their patrol car was hit by an accused drunk driver.

Southaven Police Chief Steve Pirtle didn’t identify the officers but did say one of them had just started with the department.

“It was the first day of his career as a police officer when he and his training officer made a routine traffic stop on Interstate 55 North of Goodman Road”, said Pirtle.

It was Saturday morning around 3 a.m. after stopping another possible drunk driver – and yep, that driver was under the influence so they made their arrest and had the suspect transported to the police department by a fellow officer. Following protocol, the officers sat on the side of the road with their blue lights flashing to wait for a tow truck to impound the driver’s car.

Just a routine encounter for the rookie and the training officer but that was about to change.

According to police headed south bound on Interstate 55 was sixty-six year old Arvell Blayde of Memphis driving his red Chrysler 300 at a high rate of speed and driving under the influence. He veered off the highway onto the median striking the two officers in their parked car. He struck the vehicle with such force that it set off every air bag, totaling the police cruiser and sending both officers to Baptist DeSoto hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

“With all the damage, they could have been killed or seriously hurt, but we were blessed for sure” the Chief said.

Blayde will appear in Southaven Court this week facing several charges in addition to the DUI.
