A Time for Unity

This column is not meant to be political, though it may sound so. It’s more about what our responses should be from a biblical standpoint regarding the chaotic times in which we live. It’s really just a simple plea for unity.

We are a deeply divided Nation, and the view of our division as seen from God’s perspective is not going to win us any favor from Him. If you label yourself as an anti-Trump American, you may feel you’re in the right in opposing current President, or you may feel a bit of righteous indignation as justification for your hating him and others of our Leaders, but what does scripture command us to do? Look at Daniel’s words as he declares a truth about all Leaders…..

“Daniel said, “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. “It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding.”
‭‭Daniel‬ ‭2:20-21

And he penned this insight in chapter 5 in talking with King Belshazzar about his father King Nebuchadnezzar…..

“He was also driven away from mankind, and his heart was made like that of beasts, and his dwelling place was with the wild donkeys. He was given grass to eat like cattle, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven until he recognized that the Most High God is ruler over the realm of mankind and that He sets over it whomever He wishes.”
‭‭Daniel‬ ‭5:21

And let’s re-examine the Apostle Paul’s warning in Romans…..

Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭13:1-2‬

And also Paul’s charge to Titus…..

“Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed,”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭3:1

And Peter also gave direction concerning Leaders with these words…..

“Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:13-14

Honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:17‬

Well, if I’m reading those scriptures correctly, it seems to me that the Lord is the one who sets people in power. And we are to honor those people in power. And rebelling against the President and others in power is rebelling against God, but you are free to draw your own conclusions. Yes, the Lord has certainly installed evil Leaders in place in the past as the Bible teaches us, and He has placed good Leaders in positions of power as well. Evil men such as Egypt’s Pharaoh and Rome’s King Herod come to mind, as do Israeli heroes Moses and Joshua, who were anointed for good. Suffice it to say the current President needs prayer. He is apparently morally challenged and there’s no defending him in that area, but to spend every waking moment as some do trying to destroy him is NOT in America’s best interest, nor yours, especially if you believe the Lord placed him there as the above scriptures indicate. For the record I prayed for his predecessor President Obama, and I’m asking you to do the same now in praying for Trump. I’m not asking you to approve of his lifestyle, or turn a blind eye to anyone’s immorality, but if we will uphold our Leaders in prayer, I’m confident we will see a change. We could see revival for one. We could also see a shift in how other Nations of the World view us as well. They currently see nothing but relentless attack after attack of our President and his policies from within his own Country, and that shows forth a true weakness to our enemies. We need to be united if for no other reason than to instill fear in them. Let us not forget the timeless phrase “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Just this past week, in a roundtable discussion concerning immigration, President Trump was speaking about members of the MS-13 Gang. This is a vile and wicked gang responsible for several grisly murders, and Trump called them “animals”. The left leaning Media, including CNN, NBC, ABC, and the NY Times, with their seemingly deep hatred of Trump, immediately ran the quote saying the President used the negative connotation in describing all illegal immigrants. This was a egregious and intentional misrepresentation of the truth, but the damage was done. Half the country, which apparently gets its news from these liberal news outlets, may now think that Trump called all illegal immigrants “animals”, which he did not. The Media are fueling and fanning the fires of hatred in this country. They are more arrogant and brazen than ever before. I certainly can’t tell you which media outlet to garner your news from, but if you’re praying for Trump and you’re in a close relationship with the Father, I believe you’ll have a certain amount of skepticism when hearing such stories, no matter who you tune into for news.

I have a question for those of you who hate Trump and are bent on his destruction;

What will your response be to God on Judgement Day if you learn the Father placed him there in accordance with His will?

You should meditate on that for a bit. Our position, as mandated by scripture, should be one of humility and prayer. There simply isn’t another position which will heal this Nation. Let’s once again look at God’s charge to Solomon…..

“and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭7:14

Imagine a people united in the humble position of repentance. Imagine a Country operating as one. Examine if you will, the Nation of Israel under Joshua’s leadership and their unified stance…..

“They answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the LORD your God be with you as He was with Moses. Anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous.”
‭‭Joshua‬ ‭1:16-18‬ ‭NASB

Can you imagine what this Nation could be like if the people served this President in unity as Israel did Joshua, rather than spending every waking moment trying to destroy him? Certainly I’m not comparing our current President to Joshua so don’t try to read that into my words. I’m merely saying if we were unified as a Nation behind our Leaders, then we could expect that the Lord would indeed bless America once again.

If you say “Pastor Mike, this Nation has never been unified”, then I would take you back in time to the unity witnessed immediately following the tragedies of 9/11. Yes, some Democrats still spoke against President Bush in those days, and the Kumbaya moments were perhaps short lived, but for a brief span of time there was a ‘coming together’ for many of us, and it was refreshing. It was us against our enemies! Again, I’m appealing to the decency that resides in all of us as Americans, and asking for unity in praying for our Leaders. I honestly believe President Trump means what he says about making America great again, and we can assist him in doing so with our prayers.

If you want change, be change. Pray for our Leaders, rather than seek their demise.

And that’s the way I see it.

Pastor Mike
