A Pastors Perspective, Is His Light Shining?

Is His light shining?

As Christians we are to be Lighthouses. We are to shine the light of Christ into the darkness of peoples lives, saving them from crashing on the destructive shores of life. We are to be a beacon of Hope. We are to give off a bright light that leads them to safety. But is it His light shining or is it our own?

To say that Social Media has changed our lives is a vast understatement. Prior to the introduction of Social Media, we really didn’t know if we weren’t liked by someone. Now it’s readily obvious as we’re insulted or ridiculed, or even worse blocked by a “friend” hiding behind their profile pic as if invisible. Facebook also allows to instantly see when someone is angry, depressed, foolish, lonely, happy or bitter.

There was a time when some Christians could live secret lives, hiding behind a curtain of righteousness on Sundays, the only day we saw them. Now people live in glass houses due to Social Media and we can peer into each other’s lives, reading every moment’s comments, which are sometimes surprising. Unfortunately, we can now witness outrage, read crude language, and see behavior that used to remain behind closed doors.

Then there are those who stand on political soapboxes while in their Lighthouse. Rather than shine the light of Christ, they instead preach to us the wrongs of the opposite Party or candidate, or the wonders of their own, all the while dimming the light that is meant to save. Trust me, I’m as guilty as anyone, but lately I’m feeling more and more that my own Lighthouse bulb needs an upgrade. It’s about Him and I must shine for Him! I must lead people away from danger and direct them to safety. The safety of a life surrendered to Jesus.

We mustn’t dim the light of Christ while shining our own, and expect to divert people away from perils. Our own dim, underpowered, inadequate lighting can’t even save us, let alone others. We must make sure that the light we shine is Christ! He IS light!!

It’s also time we remove things in our Lighthouse that may be blocking the beam of Christ’s light. Remove the boxes of self promotion, anger, hate, jealousy, pride or bitterness that are stacked in the way of His beam. Let His Grace and His love sweep that room clean. And don’t give in to anger, but rather show restraint the next time you feel the urge to post if someone or some thing has you ticked off. Nor should you ever give in to the pressure to be vulgar or crude thinking it might be funny. That “worldly” light is blinding the eyes of those who need the TRUE light!!

If you MUST shine your own light, remember Jesus’ own instruction….

“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:16

And that’s the way I see it!
