As the Deer

Though it may not be familiar to some, I’d like to share the lyrics of a favorite Chorus of mine.  Written by Martin Nystrom in 1984, it’s music is hauntingly beautiful as well, but it’s those lyrics that will draw you in, and have you singing them under your breath often.

Here are the lyrics….

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after Thee
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship Thee

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship Thee

You’re my friend and You are my brother
Even though You are a King
I love You more than any other
So much more than anything

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship Thee

I love You more than gold or silver,
only You can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy giver
and the apple of my eye.

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart’s desire
And I long to worship Thee

The reason it is one of my favorites might be obvious to some, but it’s simply because this Chorus is pure worship, and therein lies its beauty. The lyricist is not asking for anything. They are not begging God to help them. They aren’t complaining about their trials, or whining or bemoaning their fate. They’re not grumbling about not having money, or the plight of the Nation, or even protesting something they’re offended by..  They are simply and beautifully worshipping their King!

Unashamedly!

That is the essence of worship; that it is not about us, it is about HIM!!  That’s true worship!  That’s true love!  Your focus is on Him and Him alone. Here the chorus is performed by an unknown artist, but play it over and over until it’s your anthem of worship too!

The next time you’re in your quiet time, let that be your attitude. An attitude of reverence and love; a heart of gratitude and awe; a peaceful silence that comes about because you’re with the One you love, and the World can’t bother you while you’re there. You are resting in that Secret Place the Psalmist mentioned in Psalm 91. It is in that Secret Place that you will find rest…..it’s there that you’ll be renewed….and it’s there that you’ll experience love unlike you’ve known.

If you only know the Lord as an angry God ready to punish sin, then you don’t know Him. Learn about Him! Seek Him!  Become a worshiper of Him today. If worship is foreign to you, read the lyrics again…..they will teach you how to worship. It’s as if you’re singing to a man or to a woman that you love, but instead the object of your desire is the Lord of the Universe!  When you fall in love with the Lord, you will discover what awaits you; the peace that you’ve longed for….the rest that you need….the comfort only He can give….and you’ll find satisfaction for your soul….you WILL be satisfied.

You might say “Pastor Mike, I can’t worship Him like that. I can’t even pray to Him, because I know He is angry with me because of my sin.”

NOT TRUE!

We’ve written concerning this in the past, but let’s review, shall we?  God knows everything today that He will know tomorrow. He is all-knowing!  He knows your future. Therefore He can’t be disappointed by you and your actions because He knew what would happen. He can’t be taken by surprise. And therefore He can’t be angry. He KNEW what you would do, and He further knows that you’re sorry. He’s just waiting for you to repent. He’s waiting for you to come back to Him. He is waiting for you to worship Him. All is forgiven when you are in His presence!  So repent and seek Him!  Worship Him for who He is; a loving God!  Look how He describes Himself in Exodus 34:6,7….

“Then the LORD passed by in front of Moses and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin;….”

That is the God that’s waiting in that quiet place for you. A loving God of grace. So worship Him. Make it about Him, and trust me, He will then make it about you!

And that’s the way I see it!
