The Way I See It, A Pastor’s Perspective “Praying For Others”

Do you ever ask if you can pray for others? I have always enjoyed praying for people. Especially when I can lay on hands on them. There is something about the touch. It can impart the presence of the Lord. It’s a true blessing when you get to pray for someone else. Especially when those prayers are answered!

There are prayers I use from scripture, such as Paul’s prayers found in Ephesians and Colossians, that when answered are the best prayers to pray. More about those in a moment. But there are prayers you can pray that can move the hand of God if they are received in faith, and if there is anticipation over the outcome. I love to pray that people receive wisdom. The Father is always willing to grant wisdom to those who cry out for it in earnest. Solomon, the wisest man to live, had much to say about wisdom. Look at the opening verses of Proverbs….

“These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles. Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭1:1-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬.

“Fools despise wisdom”. Don’t be a fool! A good exercise in Bible study is to read one chapter in Proverbs each day, and at the end of a 31 day month, you’ll have read the entire book and you will be much the wiser. That will help you in knowing what to pray when praying for others. The gift of Discernment is powerful! Ask the Lord for that gift! Be wise!

When praying for someone who has made known their need or request, be wise in the wording of your prayers. Don’t put God in a box or demand a date of completion from Him. There are certain prayers that may take time to see results. Prayers such as those for family members to be saved or to turn their lives around, for example. Those prayers may not be answered swiftly if they are prayers which are against the will of the person being prayed for. You should know that the Father will not force His will on anyone. If for example they have no desire to be saved, the results may not come immediately. But also know that if they’re stubborn, He will make it harder and harder for them to refuse His constant pulling at their heart. Again, be wise!

Let’s examine the prayers I mentioned earlier in Scripture. Paul’s prayer in chapter 3 of Ephesians is perhaps the most powerful prayer you or I could pray over someone!

“When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:14-19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Look at the results that can be achieved by praying that prayer over someone! They can be empowered with inner strength! Christ can make His home in their hearts! They can be deeply rooted in God’s love! He can give them the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is for them!! When that prayer takes effect in their life, Paul said they will be complete! That’s the prayer I want to pray for everyone!! That they would know His love in that measure and be complete! That could eliminate the worry and stress they have over the problems they face. Because if they know the depth of His love for them, then they will trust Him with tomorrow. They’ll trust Him with today as well. Their worry and fear will to turn to peace and confidence, realizing God really does love them and wants the best for them!!

Let’s look at Paul’s prayer in Colossians….

“So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to His people, who live in the light.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:9-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Again, another powerful prayer! When answered, that prayer will give people everything they need to be victorious! He’s praying that they will be given spiritual wisdom. That their life would please the Lord. And perhaps best of all, that they would be filled with His glorious power so they can endure. That’s the prayer I want prayed over me! To know that I have wisdom and that my life is pleasing Him, and that I would have His glorious power to endure! Sign me up!

The prayers that you pray for others will offer hope. They will offer inspiration. But they can also offer results! James 5:16 says “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” I think it goes without saying that you should keep yourself pure for the sake of others. Live a disciplined life so that your prayers will be answered! And build up your faith with worship, study of the word, and quality prayertime in your quiet place. You can’t let others drink from your well if it’s empty!

It may seem obvious to state, but when you pray for others pray believing! I’ll be honest, I never pray for someone and then doubt my prayer will be answered. I truly pray with assurance each time that the Lord is going to respond. You must pray with that conviction! You must believe He is going to respond. Anything less than all out faith is wasting their time and yours, not to mention the Lord’s!

Pray for others as often as you get the opportunity. Now you may say, “Pastor Mike, I’m too shy to pray for others. And what if God doesn’t answer? Then I’ll look like a fool!” Well, you shouldn’t mind being a fool for the Lord. Besides, it’s not up to you if God answers the prayer, it’s up to Him. Let Him have the opportunity to show Himself mighty and strong by moving in someone’s life because of your prayer. It will build your faith. It will give you confidence to be bolder. It will make you feel empowered, and that all your prayers will be answered. That’s the type of faith He is looking for; that you believe that every time you pray things will happen! And that type of faith building comes about by praying for others instead of always just praying for yourself! Make it about others! It will change your life! And that’s the way I see it.
