Southaven Police Officer Hit By Fleeing Shoplifter

By, Charlie Hoots

One of our Southaven police officers is lucky to be alive today after being hit by the

car of a fleeing shoplifter this morning at Walmart.

Around 1 a.m. this morning police were called to Walmart about a suspicious person.

When officers arrived they saw a male black pushing a shopping cart out the front door,

setting off the security alarm.

When police attempted to stop the subject to talk to him, he took off running on foot

to his car and started speeding away.

At that point he struck one of our officers knocking him to the ground injuring him.

The suspect, Oliver Peyton from Memphis, then hit two more Southaven Police cars and

two Desoto County deputies cars before he was taken into custody.

The unidentified injured Southaven police officer is expected to be okay.

Peyton, who is 46 from Memphis, was charged with Shoplifting, Aggravated Assault on an Officer, Simple

Assault on an officer, Felony fleeing and several traffic charges.

The item stolen that caused all this, a copy machine…
